Traditional Intricate Stone Jali Lattice Screens

The Function and Beauty of Traditional Stone Jali Screens

A Jali is a perforated stone or latticed screen, common in Indian, Indo-Islamic, and Rajasthani architecture. Designed to address hot climates, jalis restrict direct sunlight while allowing breezes to pass through, cooling building interiors. They also provide privacy, allow people inside to look out unseen, and create moving shadow patterns across floors. Our hand-carved stone jali screens bring this classic design and climate-responsive functionality to modern luxury homes, hotels, and gardens.

Geometric patterns, Floral scrolls, and Modern Lattice Designs

We carve jali screens in a variety of patterns. Our traditional collections feature geometric lattices, Mughal flower borders, and star patterns. For contemporary projects, we carve minimalist lines, leaf patterns, and abstract shapes. The materials include red Agra sandstone, beige sandstone, and white Makrana marble, with standard thicknesses of 2 inches (50mm) to ensure structural strength and deep shadows.

Chiseling Openwork Panels and Structural Strength

Carving a jali screen requires patience and skill. The artisan sketches the pattern onto the stone slab, drills starter holes in each opening, and uses manual saws and files to remove the excess stone. The edges of each opening are beveled or rounded to create a clean finish and deep shadow lines. We maintain a balance between open space and structural stone, ensuring the panel remains strong and wind-resistant.
